An Investigation of the Compliance of the Abstracts of Persian JournalArticles Approved by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology with Abstract-Writing Standards (ISO 214)

Abstract

In this study, 300 abstracts of the publications approved by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology were investigated according to the abstractingstandard, ISO 214, using the descriptive-survey method and Cochran’s sampling in five areas of humanities, basic science, technical science and engineering, art and architecture, natural resources, agriculture and veterinary.
At first, through studying the abstracting standard ISO 214, the researcher specified 9 criteria in content and style and then evaluated each article by preparing a check-list. A zero (0) point is defined for non-compliance criteria and one (1) point for compliance criteria. After the investigation, the journal’s total points in accordance with the international standard ISO 214 were computed. The findings indicated that the compliance of the considered journals with ISO 214 is totally 88/66%. Furthermore, the rank of the articles’ criteria, using active verbs and avoiding abbreviations were considered 100% in all investigated abstracts. Then, the goal of research with 95%, using the third person pronouns with 94%, describing the results with 70% and explaining the research method with 55%.
