Abstract

Before enacting any new laws for professors, students, and, more broadly, art academies, one must first pose the fundamental question: Why should these academies exist at all? And what would happen to art, the artist, and possibly the scientific system if they did not?
This essay, with reference to the state of art academies in Iran over recent decades, seeks to address these questions from a philosophical perspective. Based on this inquiry, it argues that due to the distinct nature of artistic work compared to other academic activities—particularly within the humanities and social sciences—certain decisions should or should not be made, and specific policies can meaningfully contribute to the advancement of this field. Before enacting any new laws for professors, students, and, more broadly, art academies, one must first pose the fundamental question: Why should these academies exist at all?
