The evaluation and measurement of science, technology, and innovation (STI) is a reality that has been present in the world in the past and now, because it has always been assumed that science, technology, and innovation can improve human health and well-being. Based on this, identifying the most active and influential universities, research centers, organizations, researchers, scientists, and other factors related to publications, patents, and citations can open new ways and paths for the establishment of systematic scientific and research communication and cooperation to understand the general responsibilities of all people and to exchange scientific information in different fields. Due to the role and importance of scientific communication in obtaining new findings, evaluation and measurement of scientific publications and activities have always been the focus of bibliometric and scientometric experts.
Scientific productions (publications and patents), as an indicator of the activities of the scientific system, countries, organizations, and research centers, have always been the focus of policymakers and decision-makers at the national and international levels. The main purpose of this study was to study the performance of researchers supported by the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF) in the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases.
The present research has been done using the descriptive and scientometric approaches. The data obtained from the research were analyzed using the HistCite, VOSviewer, and Excel software. The research population consists of scientific publications indexed in the Scopus database with 10,397 documents on June 14, 2021, and WoS with 11,530 documents on May 11, 2021.
According to the findings, the most scientific publications (articles and patents) resulting from the studies supported by the INSF were for the years 2020 with 1,782 documents, 2019 with 1,730 documents, and 2018 with 1,522 documents. The lowest number of publications was in 2008 with 76 documents. The results of the research also show that the articles extracted from the research supported by the INSF exhibited a sinusoidal growth trend and in some years there has been a gap in growth. The year 2008-2009 with 69.35% had the highest growth trend of scientific publications and a growth spurt was observed. The years 2009-2010 had the lowest growth with a drop of 6.41% in scientific publications and the year 2020 had the lowest growth of 3%.
Among the authors of publications and citations, Massoud Salavati with 325 documents was the most prolific author in Scopus, and Abbas Shafiei with 199 documents was the most prolific author in WoS. Analysis of articles showed that 36.32 percent of articles were published in journals of the first and second quartiles (Q 1 and Q 2) indicating the articles’ scientific quality. The publications supported by the INSF have had the most national collaborations with the University of Tehran, Tarbiat Modares University, and the Sharif University of Technology in WoS. Research publications supported by the INSF nationally have had the most collaborations with the University of Tehran, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and Islamic Azad University in papers indexed in Scopus. The publications supported by the INSF at the international level in WoS have had the most collaborations with Iran, the US, Germany, and Canada. The publications supported by the INSF have also had the most international cooperation with Iran, the US, Germany, and Canada in Scopus. Analyzing the subject areas of publications showed that most of its publications in WoS were in the field of multidisciplinary chemistry with 1,083 documents, multidisciplinary sciences with 998 documents, and chemistry physics with 837 documents. Investigating the subject category of publications supported by the NSF in Scopus indicated that the field of chemistry with 3,022 documents, engineering with 2585 documents, and material science with 2,496 documents have the most documents.
In addition, based on the search conducted in the US patent database, 31 patents have been granted and registered based on studies supported by the INSF. The highest frequency of growth of patents resulting from the INSF-supported research is for the years 2015 and then 2009, and the lowest frequency is for the year 2008 with 2 patents. Note that in 2014-2012, the growth process stopped. The researchers supported by the INSF have had research cooperation and science diplomacy with 76 countries, Iran with 4,060 collaborations, the United States of America with 997 research collaborations, and Germany with 523 research collaborations have the most research cooperation with the researchers supported by the INSF.
The findings showed that publications supported by the INSF have an increasing trend and the main formats of scientific publications were research articles, review articles, quick access articles, litigation articles, and book chapters. From this study, it can be concluded that the analysis of the time trend of the scientific publications and patents of researchers supported by the INSF in two databases of Scopus and Web of Science showed that these publications have an increasing trend. Considering the importance of the connections between science and technology, it is suggested to policymakers and managers pay more attention to patents and their commercialization to create a connection between the INSF and the industry.
